Eggs prompt Salmonella Worry

Arkansans are being cautioned to check their eggs to be sure they're not among those under recall because of Salmonella contamination. Ed Barham with the Arkansas Health Department says the eggs in question aren't produced here but they're distributed by food wholesalers to supermarkets in the state. Barham says the very young, elderly or those with chronic medical conditions are at greater risk from the effects of Salmonells. He suggests you check the eggs in your refrigerator. If they are on the recall list, return them to the palce of purchase.

The Number of Burn Bans Continues to Climb

Don't be deceived by the relatively small amount of rain in some parts of the state yesterday. New School Start Times

The Pulaski County Special School District administration is working on lengthening the elementary school day by 40 minutes with an earlier start. The District's Deb Roush says the change is required by state law to give teachers planning time during the school day instead of before or after school. She says there are still a few details to work out - among them the teacher contract but a complete list of the times is available on the District's Web site, http://www.pcssd.org.

Thanks to the June 1st deadline, the staff at the state Department of Higher Education is buried in academic scholarship applications - more than 53 thousand of them. Department head, Dr. Jim Purcell says, if you're hoping to be one of the recipients of a scholarship this year, you can help. He suggests you to stop calling to check the status of your application. Microsoft and Arkansas Team Up to Offer Free Training

Its an offer of free training from Microsoft - something Kimberly Friedman with the state Department of Workforce Services says Arkansas couldn't refuse. As part of Microsoft's Elevate America Initiative, it is making vouchers available for online training in several software programs, as well as Web development and certification. E-Z Mart Robber

Little Rock and North Little Rock are looking for a robber who seems to have a favorite convenience store chain. Lt. Terry Hastings says he has hit two E-Z Marts in Little Rock, one in North Little Rock and may be responsible for other robberies in the area.



Lt. Hastings describes the guy as a black male, 25 to 30 years old, 5'8" to 5'10" inches tall, 165 pounds. He also says the robber is very polite and always says 'thanks' after he robs the store. If he looks familiar call Little Rock robbery detectives at 371-4660.

Attempted robbery at a department store? Maybe a little unexpected but that's just what happened at the Conway JCPenney's yesterday afternoon. Officer Chris Harris says a man walked into the Men's Department and demanded cash from the register. Officer Harris says, even though he claimed to have a gun, the clerk didn't budge so the would-be robber walked away. He says they'd like to find this guy because the next time he could have a weapon and he might use it. Check out the surveillance pictures. If he looks familiar, call Conway Police at 501-450-6120.

Excitement is running high on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff where First Lady Michelle Obama will deliver the commencement address Saturday afternoon. Chancellor Dr. Lawrence Davis Jr. says there aren't any tickets left for the event but UAPB will stream the First Lady's address live on the Internet. Commencement begins at 3:00 pm.

Arkansas Early Voting Starts May 3rd

As he does before almost every election, Secretary of State Charlie Daniels makes his voter turnout prediction for the May 18th primary. He says it should be BIG - somewhere between 30 to 35 percent. With a large turnout on Election Day, he says long lines are pretty-much a given. He says it's a good argument for taking advantage of early voting that starts May 3rd.

Shaken Baby Syndrome in Arkansas

Arkansas Children's Hospital and the state Department of Human Services are joining together to sound the alarm. Dr Karen First, a prediatrician and child abuse specialist at Arkansas Children's tells (K)ARN News the hospital's statistics show 'shaken baby syndrome' is on the rise in Arkansas. Dr. First says the most likely victims are infants up to about the age of nine months. Able to cry for two to three hours straight, they can raise a parent's frustration level to the red zone in no time.

An Askansas State University student is in critical condition at a Memphis hospital after he was reportedly shot in his on-campus apartment early this morning. University police are still investigating but so far say it doesn't look as though its a random shooting. Dr. Rick Stripling, vice chancellor of Student Affairs says communication is a top priority. Little Rock Bank Robbery Suspect

There was a robbery at the Summit Bank on North Taylor in the Heights Monday afternoon just after 5:00 pm. Police Lt. Terry Hastings tells KARN News the robber was last seen running south on North Taylor when he crossed Cantrell in heavy traffic and disappeared. Maybe you can help. Disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property.

Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets. SBA can also lend additional funds to homeowners and businesses to help with the cost of making improvements that protect, prevent or minimize the same type of disaster damage from occurring in the future.

For small businesses and most private, non-profit organizations of any size, SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. EIDL assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any property damage.

Interest rates can be as low as 2.562 percent for homeowners and renters and 4 percent for businesses with terms up to 30 years. Loan amounts and terms are set by SBA and are based upon each applicant’s financial condition.

Disaster loan information and application forms are also available from SBA’s Customer Service Center by calling SBA toll-free at (800) 659 2955, emailing disastercustomerservice@sba.gov, or visiting SBA’s Web site at www.sba.gov/services/disasterassistance. Hearing impaired individuals may call (800) 877 8339. Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure Web site at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.

The filing deadline to return applications for property damage is April 12, 2010. The deadline to return economic injury applications is November 10, 2010.

Morgan Freeman will Receive Major Award from Arkansas Magazine

Warwick Sabin, publisher of the literary magazine Oxford American says Freeman will receive the magazine's first award for Outstanding Contributions to Southern Culture.
